Kardashian, who rarely has addressed West’s behavior in the past, spoke out on her Instagram Story, asking fans for “compassion.”

“As many of you know, Kanye has bi-polar disorder,” she began. “Anyone who has this or has a loved one in their life who does, knows how incredibly complicated and painful it is to understand. I’ve never spoken publicly about how this has affected us at home because I am very protective of our children and Kanye’s right to privacy when it comes to his health. But today, I feel like I should comment on it because of the stigma and misconceptions about mental health,” she wrote. She added that “those who are close to Kanye know his heart and understand his words some times [sic] do not align with his intentions.”

January 2021: Kim Kardashian is preparing to divorce Kanye West

After nearly seven years of marriage and a particularly turbulent 2020, the pair’s relationship may be beyond repair.

According to multiple sources, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star is preparing to file for divorce from West, whom she wed in May 2014.

“He knows that she’s done. She has had enough, and she told him that she wants some space to figure out her future,” a source told PEOPLE, adding that West, 43, is bracing for a filing but doesn’t know when it will take place.

“He’s okay. He’s sad, but okay. He knows the inevitable will happen, and he knows that it’s coming soon,” the source added.

Another source added that Kardashian, who is working with top divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, is “waffling” and has yet to file for divorce.

Yet another source noted that the pair are currently “in counseling and exploring their options,” potentially in an effort to salvage their relationship.

February 19, 2021: Kim Kardashian files for divorce from Kanye West

On Feb. 19, 2021, Kardashian filed for divorce. A source told PEOPLE that things are amicable, however; the pair are in agreement over joint legal and physical custody, neither is contesting the prenup in place, negotiations have progressed and they are nearing a settlement.

The split came after a tumultuous period for the pair, who appeared to be on the brink of divorce last summer before reconnecting and spending private time together with their children.

In January 2020, multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE that Kardashian had been working with high-profile divorce attorney Laura Wasser and planned to file for divorce from West.

“They are just not on the same page when it comes to their future as a family,” one insider said. “And Kim is okay with it.”

Six months after Kardashian filed for divorce, a source told PEOPLE that she and West were maintaining a “friendly relationship” amid their divorce.

“Kim and Kanye have a friendly relationship. It’s always been important to Kim to have a good relationship with Kanye. They are not getting back together though,” the source explained, noting that the former couple recently had lunch together. “She accepted his lunch invitation earlier this week because they are at the point now when they can hang out. While performing at the Free Larry Hoover benefit concert on Dec. 9, 2021, at the Los Angeles Coliseum, West altered the lyrics to his song “Runaway” in a reference his estranged wife.

After Kardashian’s December 2021 request to be declared legally single, West’s lawyers filed a response, claiming that such a declaration could cause “a risk of adverse consequences.”

West’s response laid out several “conditions” he wanted to be met before Kardashian would be declared legally single, including for Kardashian to forfeit her marital privilege with West — and her new spouse, should she remarry — until their custody dispute is resolved.

Over a year after filing for divorce from West, Kardashian was declared legally single by a judge on March 1, 2022.

Though West previously challenged Kardashian’s request to be declared legally single, he said in a statement, “I’ve asked my team to expedite the dissolution of my marriage to Kim so I can put my entire attention to our beautiful children.”

March 4, 2022: Kim Kardashian is “furious” about Kanye West’s new music video

On the same day that Kardashian was declared legally single by a judge, West released a music video for the song “Eazy” on Instagram. The song drew controversy when it was released earlier in the year for referencing Kardashian’s then-boyfriend, Pete Davidson.

The video depicts West kidnapping, tying up and burying a claymation version of Davidson. A source told PEOPLE that Kardashian was “furious” about West’s music video.

November 29, 2022: Kim Kardashian and Kanye West finalize divorce

Kardashian and West are legally divorced — and they’ve come to an agreement about child custody and property.

The exes will have “equal access” to their four children, and West has agreed to pay $200,000 a month in child support. Additionally, any disputes regarding the children must be settled via mediation.

The couple also divvied up their properties in California, Idaho, Illinois, and Wyoming. The exes will remain neighbors as one of Kardashian’s Hidden Hills homes is next door to an estate that West was awarded in the split.

There will be no spousal support paid by either party and all assets will be divided based on the prenup.

On an episode of The Kardashians, Kardashian opened up about West’s erratic behavior, which involved online attacks and allegations made against her family and loved ones.
