Tom Aspinall successfully defended his interim UFC heavyweight championship against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304. Aspinall won the fight in the very first minute via TKO. His performance not only gave him a $100K performance bonus but also impressed a lot of fans and experts. This included UFC Hall of Famer Chael Sonnen, who couldn’t help but draw parallels with legendary boxer Mike Tyson.

From the start of the fight, Tom Aspinall immediately took charge and connected a heavy jab on Curtis Blaydes. This put the challenger on his back, and Aspinall followed it with nasty blows. This forced the referee to stop the fight, giving the champ a win. Chael Sonnen, who loved Aspinall’s performance, was in awe of his punching power. Sonnen, in a video, talked about how easily the Brit knocks out big heavyweights and compared him with Mike Tyson.

Mike Tyson had a hard time putting down the heavyweights that were 240, 250, 260 [pounds].
These are the guys that Tom is touching one time; this is shocking power.
Tom is getting guys out of here so quickly.

Tom Aspinall’s Power is Shocking…

After the referee stopped the fight, Blaydes and many critics protested for an early stoppage. During the post-fight presser, Aspinall brutally shut down the claims and credited Marc Goddard for stopping the fight. Tyson was known for his raw power, and despite being a fast-moving heavyweight, Aspinall does have some nasty punches.

Sonnen was also surprised by the time Aspinall has faced fighting in his last few bouts. In the last two years and four fights, Aspinall has only been in the octagon for 3 minutes and 37 seconds, with all coming via finishes. Regardless of how incredible the stat is, many, including Henry Cejudo, have shown concern about his lack of cage time. Going forward, Aspinall has Jon Jones on his radar, but it’s complicated.

Tom Aspinall cautioned not to let UFC bully him

Tom Aspinall has been chasing the Jon Jones title unification bout for a long time now. Jones discredited Aspinall and is currently scheduled to fight Stipe Miocic later this year. However, with his win against Curtis Blaydes, Aspinall has now left the heavyweight champion with no other option.

Right after the win, Aspinall sent a message to Jon Jones asking him to fight or hand in the belt. However, this respectful approach isn’t the way, according to former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub. According to the fighter turned-comedian, it’s high time that Aspinall takes a stance for himself against UFC.

You're a goddamn one percenter, you gotta start acting like it.
What I'm saying is, stick up for yourself, dude. Right now, you're getting bullied. I'm not saying go against the UFC, I'm not saying talk s*** to them, that's not the way to go. I'm saying, stick up for yourself

Dana White is already convinced to put Aspinall as the backup fighter for the November fight between Jones and Miocic. Jones has also made a sneaky remark on Aspinall’s latest win after siding with Blaydes to win the fight. If things go accordingly, it won’t be surprising to see the super fight between Jones vs. Aspinall by the end of 2024.
