In a thrilling matchup between the top Rookie of the Year contenders, Caitlin Clark led the Indiana Fever to a 100-81 victory over Angel Reese’s Chicago Sky on Friday night.

Clark put on an impressive performance, scoring 31 points, dishing out 12 assists, and grabbing four rebounds while hitting five three-pointers. Her standout game not only outshone Reese but also set two significant records. Clark surpassed Ticha Penicheiro for the most games with 10 or more assists by a rookie, now holding nine such games. Additionally, she became the first player in WNBA history to record a game with 23 or more points and 12 or more assists.

Reese finished with 10 points and 11 boards, also setting two records for the most double-doubles by a rookie with 23 and the most rebounds by a rookie with 399.

Clark likely had the edge over Reese coming into the matchup, but after she outperformed Reese in the win fans officially declared that the Rookie of the Year race is over. Even Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James chimed in on Clark’s performance.

This season, Caitlin Clark is averaging 18 points, 8.1 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game, showing significant improvement, especially since returning from the Olympic break. Meanwhile, Angel Reese is also having a standout season with averages of 13.3 points and 12.9 rebounds per game.

Despite the ongoing Rookie of the Year debate, Clark emphasized that both she and Reese are focused on winning games rather than individual accolades. “I think me and Angel would both give you the same answer,” Clark said before a recent game, as reported by Evan Frank of the Indianapolis Star. “We don’t wake up and think about individual awards. I know that’s what all of you think we do. I know we don’t. That’s what everybody wants to make this about. Both of our teams are competing for playoff spots. That is our main focus.”

With their recent win, Indiana improved to 16-16 and is now tied with the Phoenix Mercury, who hold the sixth spot in the WNBA standings. The Chicago Sky, despite dropping to 11-20, remain in playoff contention, sitting in eighth place.
