Caitlin Clark team-mate makes six-word declaration after distancing herself from Fever

Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever team-mate NaLyssa Smith has posted a short message after causing a stir with her social media activity.

Smith reacted to Fever’s WNBA play-off elimination by controversially removing the team from her social media bio. And some took her subsequent end-of-season message as a farewell to supporters, as she wrote: “All I eva wanted to do was jus hoop & show the world who I am but trust me, Y’ALL WILL SEE! 1 OUT!”

Rumours have since been circulating around whether Smith distancing herself from the WNBA franchise is a sign that the end of her three-season stay in Indiana is near.

The 24-year-old Texan hit back at those giving her stick on X earlier this week by responding to a video of her season highlights, posted by Fever’s official account, with the following six-word message: “Not too bad 4 a scrub.”

It remains to be seen whether Smith will see out her Fever contract, which runs until the end of next year, or whether some disgruntled supporters will get their way and see the 6ft 4in forward depart.

Though Smith impressed this year with an average of 10.6 points per game and 7.1 rebounds, she was dramatically outshone by first-year star Clark, who has taken the WNBA by storm.

The Iowa product has become the first rookie in 16 years to be named in the All-WNBA first team after receiving 52 votes, and she also finished fourth in MVP voting. Clark led the lead in assists per game with 8.4 and completed her all-round stats sheet with 19.2 points and 5.7 rebounds.

Fever chief Kelly Krauskopf recently spoke about the 22-year-old’s impact and how it could help them attract top talent. “Caitlin Clark was 10 years old when we won our first championship. It takes a generation sometimes to kind of get to that next level,” she said.

“I would tell our players, ‘Look, we’re building this for someone else. We’re building this for someone’s 10-year-old daughter right now.’ Because that’s what you do. I would think that if you are a smart basketball player and you watch the way she plays, you would want to play with her.

“She gets you the ball in places that you didn’t even know you were open because she passes to space. She finds openings and ways to free up other players. I look at how her and Kelsey [Mitchell] work together and the efficiency of the offence because of the way that she plays the game and I would think that would be a big draw. I think it’s an easy picture to paint to free agents.”
