Shakur Stevenson has been all over the news recently. His decision to leave Top Rank and move forward as a free agent has kept almost every top promoter busy. Recently, promoter Oscar De La Hoya posted his first ‘Clap Back Thursdays‘ video. De La Hoya declared he is not signing Shakur Stevenson to his Golden Boy Promotion company.

The WBC lightweight champion was one of the targets for De La Hoya’s new ‘Clap Back Thursdays‘ segment. The Golden Boy Chairman fires back on social media on several current buzz in the boxing community. Stevenson also became the focus of De La Hoya’s venom in his maiden installment.

You’re a free agent. You’re a great fighter and talent, but not for me. I believe that when somebody says you’re not fighting for the public, I cannot promote them.

De La Hoya singles out WBC lightweight champion Stevenson’s recent comment about not fighting for the public. The former world boxing champion took that remark to mean that the 27-year-old boxer had no interest in entertaining the fans. Ultimately concluding with Stevenson is a fighter that he didn’t want on his roster.

Stevenson openly admitted he would love the opportunity to be guided under the esteemed De La Hoya’s stable. However, the response from the entrepreneur caught the boxing world by surprise. De La Hoya, on his part, made it explicitly clear he had no intentions of signing Shakur Stevenson. The 27-year-old boxer was quick enough to give an immediate reaction to De La Hoya’s post.

Shakur Stevenson is arguably the hottest free agent in boxing right now. However, with his talent widely recognized, his free agency status is bound to change soon. It was reported that several promoters, including Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing and Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, were interested in the WBC lightweight champion.

Eddie Hearn had shown interest in signing the 27-year-old southpaw after his victory over Artem Harutyunyan on July 6th. Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya also sent an ultimatum to sign the 27-year-old undefeated boxer. However, after De La Hoya’s ‘Clap Back Thursdays‘ video aired, Stevenson was quick enough to react on that matter.

Stevenson did not disclose the identity of the person he was signing with. However, he did praise his previous promoter, Bob Arum on Thursday. This led to a belief that he had faced challenges in securing a new promoter as a free agent.

Therefore, rather than joining Matchroom or Mayweather Promotions, Stevenson might end up rejoining Top Rank. Now, determining which decision will propel the Newark fighter toward challenging the best in the division is a completely different matter.
